Unforgettable and Perfect in Every Way
by Arnold Leir
Want an unforgettable dining experience? I suggest starting with a drive along the palm lined A1A to the fabled Town of Palm Beach. When you arrive from the east or the south, head to the intersection of South County Road and Phipps Plaza. There, at the epicenter of the city, Patti's renowned 264 The Grill stands out against the overarching sky, radiant with light from hundreds of tiny bulbs positioned along the facade and entrance of one of Addison Mizner's architectural masterpieces. The coordination of the lighting, landscaping and building is simply stunning.
The fantasy continues in the lofty dining room marked by immense columns and Mizner's breathtaking Florida pine accented ceiling. A decor of beiges and reds create at atmosphere of festivity and joie de vivre. Countless diminutive lights cast haunting shadows across the space lined with high back banquettes, sparkling mirrors, contemporary graphics and a stupendous stone fireplace. This dazzling scenario reaches its high point when the Switzer Trio takes center stage with soulful renditions of jazz, modern classics and rock and roll. The dance floor becomes a vibrant milieu of chic, fun loving couples and the beat goes almost non-stop throughout the evening. To paraphrase a celebrated crooner of the not so distant past, such an evening is truly "unforgettable."
This restaurant and Chef Avery's cuisine are all about style: the ambiance, the impeccable service, the presentation of the offerings and the quality of the ingredients. The Smoked Salmon Platter ($17.95) is a showstopper featuring the fragile pink favorite, toast paints and assorted garnishes. The Warm Portabella Mushroom ($12.95) pairs a grilled cap with fragrant cheese, crispy strands and baby greens. The formidable wine list includes Radcliff's Sauvignon Blanc ($10/glass) while the talented bar masters generate the outrageously delectable (Chocolate Decadence ($12).
Choosing a main is a dilemma everyone would welcome. The Chef's Filet "Maison" ($36.50) delivers a satiny cut of prime tenderloin topped with succulent shrimp. His Alaska Panko Crusted Cod ($36.95), with a splash of mango salsa, is a crisp seafood masterwork. Each exemplifies a perfect balance of paired flavors and textures.
As for desserts, two glamorous treats are a must : the delectable Apple Pie with Cinnamon Ice Cream ($11) and the silky Bread Pudding ($9.95).
In addition to the Friday night appearance of the Switzer Trio, the restaurant provides jazz sessions featuring the Susan Martin Trio on Wednesday and Sunday (7 to 10 pm) as well as piono music on Saturday evening. Happy Hour runs until 7 pm and includes a special barmenu. From 5 to 6:30pm select three courses from the Twilight Menu startings at $19.95.
